Elevating Tranquility in Library with NOVODAMP®

GERB NOVODAMP® solution to ensure a quiet atmosphere in Busan library despite heavy traffic in tunnels below

The city of Busan has committed to building a public library with a public car park to solve parking problems in high-density residential areas by using the unused space in the upper part of the San Seong Tunnel, through which about 12,000 vehicles pass every day.

In 2021, the construction of Geum Saem Public Library was completed and it became a local cultural centre for the citizens of Busan.

Urban Integration and Acoustic Challenges at Geum Saem Library

The Geum Saem Library project is uniquely positioned in a densely developed urban environment, flanked by residential buildings to the east and west, a serene park to the south, and small houses with scenic hiking trails at the rear. A significant design challenge was presented by the San Seong Tunnel, which runs directly beneath the site and sees approximately 12,000 vehicles pass through daily. The tunnel’s entrances are prominently situated right in front of the library, intensifying the potential for noise and vibration disruption.

To address these complexities, the library was thoughtfully divided into two distinct sections:

  1. The Materials Use Section – featuring a children’s library and reference room, designed to foster a quiet and studious environment.
  2. The Cultural Education Section – comprising an auditorium, cultural lecture rooms, and a café, each requiring a tranquil atmosphere to support community engagement and learning.

Given the complicated mix of urban pressures and the need for quiet interior spaces, the design team consulted GERB to develop a comprehensive solution. GERB’s expertise was crucial in mitigating the adverse effects of traffic-induced vibrations and noise, ensuring that the library could serve as a peaceful cultural sanctuary amidst the city’s hustle and bustle.

Innovative Acoustic Solution for Geum Saem Library

Faced with the challenge of isolating the Geum Saem Library from the vibrations and noise generated by the busy San Seong Tunnel below, GERB Korea proposed a straight forward solution: the NOVODAMP® B018 full mat system. The advanced material, with a designed thickness of 37.5 mm and a natural frequency range of 7-8 Hz, was chosen for its superior vibration and noise isolation capabilities.

The installation of the NOVODAMP® system covered approximately 700 m² of the library’s main foundation. This strategic implementation significantly reduced the transmission of vibrations and noise from the tunnel, creating a pleasant environment within the library and its adjoining facilities.

The integration of a the full-surface NOVODAMP® solution enabled a state-of-the-art library and public car park, but it also transformed the Geum Saem Library into one of Busan’s most modern and beloved cultural centers. The project’s success was recognized in 2021 when the library received the Busan Architecture Prize, underscoring its excellence in design and urban integration.
