Tuned Mass Dampers (TMD)
Flexibility with high-performance GERB TMDs
In addition to spring element, elastomer and damper solutions we offer high-performance vibration damping systems to meet the highest customer expectations and requirements.
Tuned Mass Dampers (TMDs) cover a wide range of requirements such as a frequency range of 0.1 Hz – 200 Hz and a vibration mass range of 500 g – 600 t. Each TMD system is always a custom solution connected to a single point in the structure, adapted to the main construction and the respective natural frequency.
In general, GERB TMDs are passive systems and consist of:
- vibration masses,
- springs or pendulums,
- and Viscodampers®.
They are either horizontally or vertically effective. In most vertical applications, helical compression springs and viscous damping are used. In case of horizontal and torsional vibrations, GERB also supplies TMDs with leaf springs or pendulums.
TMDs are mainly used in wide-span, tall or slender structures that are oscillated by wind forces, machines or pedestrian traffic. When natural frequencies and inherent damping are low, vibrations can easily be reduced.
The use of TMDs makes particular sense in the following cases:
- Large and slender free-standing structures (e.g. bridges, chimneys, television towers, antennas)
- Light-weight structures (e.g. footbridges, walkways, grandstands)
- To reduce structural vibrations caused by machinery (e.g. due to unbalance forces)
